Lola

My stomach would be consumed in butterflies the night before we left for Grandma's. I couldn't wait to play with her and my cousins; to have her talk to me and listen to whatever I had to say. She made me feel like a million bucks; like my face was the best thing ever seen and my stories were the most important ones she would ever hear. While I was growing up, there was no place I would rather be than Grandma's.  It was there we "ran away" to the D. I. to search for treasures, ate cereal before bed, and took long bike rides down the "butter dip."

We played dress up with fabulous vintage clothes, high heels, and old perfume bottles that Grandma had collected especially for us. When we insisted on performing a dance routine we had made up, she watched, cheered, and praised us for days for our moving rendition of "Under the Sea" from the Little Mermaid.

She never missed any excuse to spend time with us; whether it was for Grandparent day or 1st grade graduation, she was there. She got us hooked on classic movies and convinced me to find a man like Frank Sinatra to marry one day. She was one of my best friends.  Even though her hair was gray and laugh lines covered her face, she was always young to me.

Two years ago today, my sweet friend passed away. I miss her every. Single. Day. I just want to hear her voice on the phone again, saying, "I love you, pooh bear." I miss her faithful letters and phone calls that made my day. I miss her clean smell and her comforting hugs. I miss her smiles, smirks, and downright stubborn attitude. I miss her child-like excitement at Christmas that was contagious. Most of all, I miss my friend I had for only 21 years. An amazing person who taught me how to have fun, work,  enjoy life, and cherish family.

So. You may think that you have the best grandma, but if she is anyone but Lola--fat chance. After all, Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl. With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there.   Oh, man, she would just kill me for associating her with that song. But seriously, she was an amazing woman and I try to live everyday so I can see her again someday. And we can hang out. With Frank Sinatra. :)
