A Place to Call Home

This post is inspired by a project from Compass.com called Starter Stories. Compass is a sweet real estate website based around NYC and Washington, DC areas that help people find their dream space with the help of handy neighborhood guides. It is a renter/buyers best friend for the stressful and exciting time of finding that perfect place.

We started our own house hunting extravaganza over three years ago and scoured hundreds of homes online. We were looking for a fixer-upper with good bones in a family friendly, great-dane-loving neighborhood. We had a specific, probably naive checklist, but found just what we were looking for.

When we moved into our first home, we looked at the stark white walls, boring carpets, and unique/challenging floor plan and a saw a diamond in the rough. We couldn't wait to get started and have had a project nearly every weekend since we moved.

We like to call ourselves DIY-ers and have learned so much because of our quirky,  sometimes downright annoying house. None of the ceilings are level. Hanging cabinets was a nightmare. All of the doors were hung wrong so there was a gap of daylight around them. Our bathroom tile looks like it was put in by a six year old.

But...

It's ours. Our blood, sweat, tears, and the occasional cuss word are in every single room. That darn kitchen now has beautiful cabinets and dark flooring. Our walls all boast color ranging from dark plum to a soft beige. Our photos from world-wide travel and Ben's art grace our walls and remind of of how blessed we are for friends, family, and a place to call home.

I can honestly say I love our house. I maybe don't always love the projects or the fact that the work is never really done. But, I feel like we have brought out this house's potential to be something incredible and that's pretty awesome.
