My Favorites: For Sick Babes
It's that crappy time of year: sick season. We used to breeze on through without a care in the world until little Jude entered the world and brought with him the challenges of prematurity and chronic lungs. Now I hold my breath from October to May and cringe, grabbing my hand sanitizer and N95 anytime someone coughs, sneezes, or has that look that they might be harboring measles or the Ebola virus.
We have caught colds at our house last week. (Yes, just colds. We saw our doctor and I called him twice. Call me paranoid). I blame it on the fact that Ben and I work in petri dishes and that my body has finally rejected working variable shifts and just refuses to sleep. Like at all. Ever.
Anyway, I put together a list of my favorite things when my kid is sick. We wish you health and a whole lot less snot than we've got around here, but just in case:
1. Cool mist humidifier. I like this one; it was the only one Target had at 9:30 at night and it's worked just fine.
2. Graco suction. Being a nurse, I'm a bit of a suction brat and this is the one system that works every time to clear the boogies.
3. Saline drops. These things are great for relieving nasal congestion and dryness that can come with a cold. I also put a few in each nostril before suctioning to loosen the boogies. I'm not too particular on the brand, but I've used these ones quite a bit.
4. Daniel's Croup and Cold Ointment. My momma slathered this on me as a child and I do the same for my babe. It's similar to Vick's only 1000 times better and hails from a little pharmacy in Malad, Idaho (which makes it even more awesome in my book). It has done wonders for Jude's congestion and cough when I put it on his feet and chest. I couldn't find a place to order it on line, but here's a phone number 208.766.2241 so you can call beautiful down town Malad to get yourself a jar of magic.
5. Gerber Soothe Drops. These are advertised as a colic drop, but our pediatrician recommended them for overall gut health and to help with the roller coaster of constipation and diarrhea that can happen with preemies. I use them all the time, especially if Jude is on an antibiotic or something is irritating his tummy.
These things saved me last week! What do you use for your sick littles?
