Hi Lola-- A Year with You
Hi baby girl,
I am soo embarrassed my last post on here was your birth story. Let's just say having two kiddos has rocked my world and I just can't seem to keep up with it all anymore. It's ok. I'd rather chase you and your brother around than sit on a computer.
So, I'm just going to talk about you from the very beginning.
Your umbilical stump never fell off correctly and you developed a granuloma. The doctor had to dump silver nitrate on it to get it to dry out. It was pretty stinky.
You screamed like a banshee with every single bath until you were four months old. The only way you'd somewhat tolerate it was if I heated the bathroom up like a sauna, swaddled you in a blanket and held you on my lap in the tub while singing, "Let it Be" by the Beetles. But now, you splash and kick and sing to ME. It's the best.
You had your first social smile AND giggle around five weeks old. It was music to my ears, because, girl. You were a screamer. Like big-time. You liked to be held upright, but not snuggled. You're still not a snuggler, but for Dad, you tolerate it.
In your first few months, you never slept longer than an hour at a time. Let's just say, I don't miss those days, dear.
You refused to sleep on your back. From just a few weeks old, you'd pull your legs up and curl over to your side. This kept your head nice and round and your mullet intact.
Speaking of your mullet, you have always had the most full, beautiful head of hair. When you were being born, the nurse motivated me big time when she said, "this girl has a full head of hair."
Your Dad gave you a beautiful blessing on April 9. True to your spunky self, you bawled through the whole thing. Grandpa kept trying to give you your binky and the bounce they had going was pretty intense, but you just screamed until it was over. Your Dad blessed you with "courage to serve" and a desire to lead people by your example and "lead others to make good choices." It was so perfect--except the screeching, of course.
You hated breastfeeding. I think it had something to do with my enormous milk supply. We tried though. I'd hold you, Grandma would keep your hands out of your face, and dad had a syringe to sneak you drops of milk and try to get you to latch. It was exhausting and caused a lot of anxiety in both of us. Exclusively pumping was the way to go and it's worked well for us (I stopped pumping around your eleventh month, but you've got two deep freezers waiting for you, love).
You love food! And feeding you is so fun. You have loved pretty much everything we've given you, but your favorites are black beans, green beans, chick peas, blueberries, tomatoes (whole!), grilled cheese sandwiches, and bananas.
You have a lot of nicknames. Lo-lita, Lolar, Lola-cherry-cola, gizmo (Grandpa), sissy (Jude), Lady Lola, Turk (Aunt Rach).
You got your first tooth around 10 months currently sport four stubby teeth that I adore.
You started crawling around seven months and I'm thinking you'll be walking soon. You take a few unassisted steps here and there, so we'll see. Having a full-term, normal baby who just grows and develops without too much intervention is definitely a new experience.
You and Jude are starting to play together and it's fun to hear you both giggle and play. You love to steal his toys, but we're working on it.
You love other babies. You crawl right over to them, grab them and squack your sweet greeting. Sometimes they smile, other times they cry, but you are social just the same.
You love signing and saying "peeeaass" (please) and waving to everyone frantically until they wave back. You sign "more" and just started "thank you." I love your little voice and hearing you say mommy and daddy is just about the best thing.
Your favorite toy is your baby doll. Seeing you rock and shhh her while you pat her back is the sweetest.
You started sleeping through the night around 10 months--hallelujah.
You have started loving books. Your favorites are the ones by Sandra Boynton: Opposites, Blue hat, Green hat, Are you a cow?
Your blue eyes are one of the first things people notice about you. You can thank Daddy for those beautiful blues, sweetie.
I love you, my dear. This year has gone too fast, but watching you grow has been amazing.
Love forever,
Mama
